Definition

Fanfiction is a style of fiction written by fans of a particular work or series of works (be it films, novels, television series', graphic novels, comics, roleplaying settings, etc.), based on the characters and settings featured in the original. Fanfiction is written almost for the sole purpose of appreciation of the original work, and exploration of the plots, relationships, characters or settings of the original.

Other terms to refer to fanfiction include: fanfic, fan fic, or simply, 'fic'.

Controversy

Some authors are unfavourable to fanfiction, as they see it as destructive to the integrity of their original work.

Fanfiction is often considered a subversive activity, because it challenges many copyright conventions. However, fanfiction authors are keen to point out the non-commercial nature of their activities, and the mutualistic nature of the fanfiction community.

Others are derisive of fanfiction as being an activity based on wish-fulfillment and lacking originality.

Literature

The Pulitzer-prise winning novel March, by Geraldine Brooks, sets out the life of March, the father of the central family in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women series. The award-winning novel clearly indicates the potential for literary merit within fanfiction.

Likewise, Jean Rhys' novel Wide Sargasso Sea was written as a prequel to Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, and follows the life of Rochester and his first wife. Wide Sargasso Sea is considered by many to be a literary classic, but it is still very much within the definition of fanfiction.

Fanfiction and SUTEKH

There are a number of SUTEKH members who read, write and enjoy fanfiction. A number of fandoms are represented in the SUTEKH fanfiction spectrum, including Harry Potter and Legend of the Five Rings.

Julia and Heather are established fanfiction authors in SUTEKH.

Percy even features in some HP rimming fanfiction (NSFW).

The Other Rule 34

"If it exists, there must be fanfiction of it."

Not to be confused with Rule 34
